(P1) Political
Here are a few photos from Joyce's and my recent trip to China (Aug. 31-Sept. 13, 2012) which blew away so many preconceptions that I hardly can know where to begin, so I won't except to attempt to explain the affluence, cleanliness, and friendliness alongside the rigid, though almost invisible control, by mentioning Deng Xiao Ping's goals to move China (1) From Planning to Market economy and (2) From Dictatorship to Democracy, BUT to accomplish the latter very slowly in order to obviate the chaos which occurred in Russia's attempt. So now scroll down for the photos and what follows.

Triolet On A Line From The Grateful Dead
Paint by number morning, sky looks
so phony.
Toss away the mold, fracture and
destroy it.
All that’s derivative, merest
baloney.
Paint by number morning, sky looks
so phony.
Who follows instruction ends up the
lonely
On oft-traveled paths dotted with
bullshit.
Paint by number morning, sky looks
so phony.
Toss away the mold, fracture and
destroy it.

It all looks amazing! Of course, I would want to visit the pandas most of all!
Looking forward to hearing more.

Looks like a Viking River Cruise.
Mitsuko and I took one about 5 years ago. I was dragged…wanted no part of China but it was a fantastic experience.
Shanghai was amazing…Chongqing was “panda city” and Xian was too short a stop. The dam was almost finished and the river was still 150m below where it was going to be.

nice pics, looks like an amazing trip

Ed,
Your trip looks and sounds marvelous.
Your take on the GD made me think to send you my poem, a parody of Gerard Manley Hopkins' poem To a Young Girl. I came to write it after Bill Clinton's great speech at the Demo Convention. When PBS cut to their booth and David Brooks and Mark Shields made their comments, Brooks looked pained and concerned. While he's the only conservative pundit I like, I knew he realized Clinton's speech could be a game changer. Thus my attached poem, To a Republican Pundit.
Enjoy,
Waights
To a Republican Pundit
A Shameless Parody
Margaret, are you grieving
Over Goldengrove unleaving?
-------------------------------------
It is the blight man was born for,
It is Margaret you mourn for.
To a Young Child—Gerard Manley Hopkins
David Brooks, are you grieving
Over Democrats unweaving?
Myths, like the thoughts of Mitt, you
With your keen mind care for, can you?
Yet, as the truth grows bolder
It comes to you much colder
For, by and by, you fain to sigh
Though words of social justice lie;
And yet you hope and know why.
Now no matter, David, the name:
Election results will be the same.
Bill Clinton so eloquently has expressed
What you did fear, others guessed:
It is the fight Democrats were born for,
It is Republicans you mourn for.
Nice pics liked theChina looked like fun. I expect a whole volume of work from you!Luv to you both
Hi Ed,
Thanks much for all the wit and wisdom!
Charles
Love the "scale of the universe" link!
Great pictures of your trip to China. Like the comments about it all exceeding your expectations. Maybe there's hope for us yet. Love the size of the universe link too.
Man, I could spend hours on the Size of the Universe alone...
Fantastic photos of your trip. Can't wait to hear more about it.
Thanks Ed, this truly is mind blowing, and yr trip to China - the analysis that they want to move to democracy slowly to avoid the chaos of Russia's revolution as an explanation (rationale) for the police-state control was new to me and food for thought.
Richard
Interesting post. I have been wondering about this issue,so thanks for posting.
