Xmas Cards For Hospitalized Military
Disabled Vietnam veteran Ed Hagan offers the following terrific easy idea!
"When you are making out your Christmas card list this year, please include the following:
A Recovering American soldier

If you approve of the idea, please pass it on to your e-mail list. (Which I did) Hope you do also. These guys need all of the praise, cheers and good will that we can give them.
The hospital will see to it that troops that aren't getting cards from family will get something from us."
Ed Hagan adds, "One personal observation: When I was in USNH Portsmouth and Oak Knoll Naval Hospital, I never received any cards during the hoidays. I was afraid to write home until I knew for sure my left arm could be saved...also my mail was being sent to the Forrestal...deployed to the Mediterranean...I didn't miss that fruit cake, but did miss...(other things)."

Ed, for some reason, as I was about to dash off (and still am) to an Asian Advocacy meeting at NYU, I decided to click on your blog. That usually takes me weeks to do, but you'd written "amazing painter." Last weekend I went to the Asian Contemporary Art Fair at Pier 92 and saw some amazing paintings and I'm about to go see the Seurat drawings at MOMA any day, so I'm in that frame of mind, I suppose.
Your friend Spitzer makes captivating art. I went to his site and, of course, I couldn't get the animation moving, but I looked at everything else. I've never seen anything quite like it, although the work does make me think of Eastern Europe, and a bit of the paintings of a Czech I knew in Rome years ago and was slightly in love with. Just generally, though, I felt like I was back in Budapest and the Hungarian countryside when I looked at Sitka Harbor, Vibration City Scape and quite a few others. These are breathing and they're breathtaking at the same time. I love The Birth of the Universe and all of California Coast. His trees scare me too much; they seem to be in conversation, very threatening chatter. And this: There's really no comparison and I know artists don't like to be compared, but there's something about this man's work that makes me think of the work of my neighbor Elizabeth Murray who died a few months ago. Their animation, I guess. I loved Elizabeth's work and I liked her, too. I was just mad for her art.

Ed, Great art from Spitzer. I was unaware of him, but like the work.
And, what a great idea from Ed Hagan. Perhaps someone can get the address of the Navy Med Ctr. in Bethesda for the sailors and marines. Also, the new rehab center in San Antonio. The latter having been built with privately donated funds, not the Bush administration.
